I. Call to Order

Speaker Robert C. Van Schoyck called the meeting to order at 7:34 in the GSA Room of the Blackmore Library.

II. Reading & Approval of Minutes –

The minutes received the following changes:

  • De-capitalize the word “motion”
  • The feedback about the Student Government initiative to receive more money should go to Senator Meyers
  • Change “Dead” to “Dean” Lovelace
  • Senator Duffy is to be added to the Rod Roddy memoriam

III. Committee Reports

Academic Affairs Committee –Sen. Chris Burton, Chair
The Committee met with 6 of 6 Senators present and no Secretary

  • Classroom inspections have been completed and sent to the various building contacts
  • Investigating increasing the amount of left-handed desks on campus
  • Senator Harmon is working on College Bowl, which will cost more than last year due to SAO budget constraints.
  • The Committee discussed Faculty Resolutions
  • Senator Burton is contacting the various chairs of committees to find locations for the purchased maps
  • Professor Eubanks could not attend due to a death in the family. He will hopefully be here to receive his honor next meeting.

Multicultural Affairs Committee –Sen. Kris Wong, Chair
The Committee met with 5 of 6 Senators present with their Secretary

  • The CURVE forum and the various feedback gained from it was discussed
  • The “Door to Acceptance” has been found. Locations for public display are being investigated

Student Interests Committee –Sen. Eric Bowman, Chair
The Committee did not meet

  • The Committee is working to get Fran McKendrie to perform in the spring as he did last year
  • The Committee is looking into recycling proposals

Student Life Committee –Sen. Shane Gunnoe, Chair
The Committee met with 9 of 9 Senators present with no Secretary

  • Members from the Committee attended the Board of Trustees meeting on November 10th, 2003 to give Student Government input
  • There are several applications for the open Student Government room
  • The Committee is investigating the lengthening of Campus Center hours
  • The Committee is meeting with Vice-President Aungst about the building of an outdoor basketball court. The meeting is to be held on November 21st, 2003.

Finance, Planning & Development Committee –Sen. Daniel Meyers, Chair
The Committee met with 3 of 3 Senators present and no Secretary

  • Met with Student Life about Campus Center hours
  • Looking into possible Student Handbook Changes for next year
  • The Committee approved funding for Campus Crusade for Christ and “On the Go”
  • The Committee attended a Master Plan Meeting
  • The Senate will receive an overall spending update at the next Senate meeting

IV. Subcommittee Reports

Curriculum and Undergraduate Faculty – Sen. Richelle Zakrzewski, Reporting
The Subcommittee met with 3 of 3 Senators present

  • Sen. Harmon is working on the implementation of College Bowl
  • Sen. York is working with the Conservatory Council to resolve issues with Conservatory Students
  • Sen. Zakrzewski is investigating particular majors’ student/faculty ratio

Educational Support –Sen. Andrew Acree, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 3 of 3 Senators present

  • Sen. Druckenmiller met with Andy Abbott about the placing of more computers in dormitory computer labs and the plan to implement an anti-viral plan on campus
  • Sen. Burton is investigating the tuning of practice pianos in the Conservatory
  • The Subcommittee is looking into the necessity of expanding library hours

International Student Affairs –Sen. Kerrie Turney, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 2 of 3 Senators present

  • Discussed the CURVE forum
  • Discussed the ice-skating event to be held by ISA on Saturday

Minority Student Affairs –Sen. Jennifer Ensley, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 3 of 3 Senators present

  • The CURVE forum was discussed
  • The “My First Year” issue was resolved
  • PRIDE has a meeting next Thursday, November 20th, 2003 at 8PM

Campus Ministries –Sen. Emily DeArdo, Chair
The Subcommittee did not meet

  • There will be a bill next General Session to allocate funds for a Fran McKendrie concert
  • The Subcommittee asks that all Senators participate in putting together a Holiday Basket for the poor

Environmental Concerns –Sen. Beth Fry, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 2 of 32 Senators present

  • Harvey Pugh has begun placing new recycling bins around various locales on campus
  • Refuse collection will be changing to pick-up system outside of dormitory rooms
  • The Subcommittee is creating an Awareness Campaign on Recycling

Commuter Concerns –Sen. Branden Meyer, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 3 of 3 Senators present

  • “On The Go”, the new Campus Commuter group, will have its first meeting Friday, November 14th at 10AM
  • The Subcommittee is investigating various locations to place a message board for Commuters
  • The Subcommittee is investigating issues with changes in the parking system

Residence Life –Sen. Chris Williams, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 3 of 3 Senators present

  • The Subcommittee is looking into increasing the amount of training and compensation that Resident Assistants are receiving
  • Sen. Williams will be meeting with Dean Lovelace Wednesday, November 12th at 11AM
  • The Subcommittee placed flyers advertising its availability to students

Student Activities –Sen. Brad Hudson, Chair
The Subcommittee met with 3 of 3 Senators present

  • The Subcommittee sent letters to all Student Organizations about the newly opened Student Organization Resource Space. Applications for having storage/work space in said Room are due Friday, November 14th

V. Announcements

Speaker Van Schoyck made several announcements:

  • Encouraged the Senate to stay active. Emphasizes that despite lack of legislation the Senate is still very involved
  • The next meeting will possibly be quite long
  • On Thursday, November 20th, at 8:30AM, there is “Breakfast with the President”. All Senators are encouraged to attend.
  • Those Senators who attended the Board of Trustees meeting are to get notes out to other Senators soon
  • The Speaker encourages all Senators to continue the good work on keeping Office Hours
  • The Speaker has learned from President Fredrickson that the Security Office will have firearms in its new office. They will be under lock-and-key unless an emergency requires their deployment
  • The Speaker is working on a Presidential House Visit
  • The Student Government Holiday Party is forthcoming
  • The Speaker states that it is unacceptable to send out opinions in the name of Student Government unless the Senate has passed a Resolution
  • The Speaker encourages Senators to check posted Retreat Goals

President Andrea Freeman made several announcements:

  • The President encourages any Senators to ask about the happenings of the Executive Branch
  • The President encourages all Student Government members to set aside their personal differences. Please submit all legislation despite the fact that it might not be passed
  • Senator DeArdo encourages all Senators to participate in the Student Government Gift Exchange
