I. Call to Order

Speaker Robert C. Van Schoyck called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM in the GSA Room of the Blackmore Library.

Acree, Bachus, Barnd, Bravard (Late), Burton, Callahan, DeArdo, Druckenmiller, Duffy, Ensley, Fry, Gunnoe, Harmon, Harris, Hudson, Martini, Meyer, Meyers, Smith, Tornero, Turney, Van Schoyck, Williams, Winston, Wong (Late), Zakrzewski (Late).

Devotions
Senator DeArdo presented the devotion, asking for the Senate to serve God and University.

II. Reading & Approval of Minutes

The minutes were approved without any changes.

III. Public Comment

The Student Activities Director, Don Miller, addressed the Senate about forthcoming Campus Center Renovations

- Mr. Miller emphasized that these changes are merely proposed, and are pending final budget approval.

The new director of the Office of Public Safety, Mr. Rich Woods, addressed the Senate, highlighting the need for a completely overhauled, redone Security Force for Capital.

IV. Committee Reports

Academic Affairs Committee –Sen. Chris Burton, Chair
Meeting was held on September 23rd, 2003 with 6 of 6 members and the Executive Branch Representative (Secretary Eric Leath) present.

  • Currently investigating and considering the graduation changes proposed by the PEC. A Resolution on the issue is forthcoming
  • Working on Faculty Resolutions
  • The Committee still needs names for appointments to the various UGF Committees

Multicultural Affairs Committee –Sen. Kris Wong, Chair
Meeting held with 5 of 6 Senators present yet no Executive Branch Representative

  • Talked to Don Miller and Dean Lovelace about Multicultural Art Task Force
  • Disseminating information about upcoming CURVE forum

Student Interests Committee –Sen. Eric Bowman, Chair
Meeting held with 6 of 6 Senators present yet no Executive Branch Representative

  • Campus Ministries two surveys are going out next week
  • The Committee is investigating Recycling at the Commons

Student Life Committee –Sen. Shane Gunnoe, Chair
Meeting held with 8 of 8 Senators present yet no Executive Branch Representative

  • Residence Life is serving on a committee to discuss Student Organizations Space
  • There is a forum being held on October 9th @ 7PM about food concerns

Finance, Planning & Development Committee –Sen. Daniel Meyers, Chair
Meeting held with 2 of 3 Senators present yet no Executive Branch Representative

  • The Budget was signed
  • Discussed Student Handbook
  • Looking into getting SG more money after analyzing findings from school comparisons

V. Subcommittee Reports

Curriculum and Undergraduate Faculty –Sen. Candi Harmon, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present
Latin will be offered in the fall dependent upon the interest of six students registering to take it

  • Sen. Zakrzewski is working on adding Italian as an offered language to Capital’s curriculum
  • Senator York is working with the Conservatory Council
  • Looking into a liberal learning initiative

Educational Support –Sen. Andrew Acree, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present

  • Classroom inspections have been completed and the information has been sent to VP Aungst
  • Senator Burton is working on a survey to measure the success of LC 02

International Student Affairs –Sen. Kerrie Turney, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present

  • Looking into a program where a Capital student takes an international student home for Thanksgiving
  • Working with ISA
  • Ordering flags in January so flag dedication can be early this year

Minority Student Affairs –Sen. Jennifer Ensley, Chair
Meeting held with 2 of 3 members present

  • Sen. Smith sent a letter out to all minority student organizations
  • The Subcommittee met with Gay Steele

Campus Ministries –Sen. Emily DeArdo, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present

  • SB 104 is on the docket to approve funds for a Campus Ministries Calendars
  • Campus Ministries survey will be sent out on Tuesday and Thursday

Environmental Concerns –Sen. Beth Fry, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present

  • Discussing adopting a park/trail
  • Looking into Recycling at Commons

Commuter Concerns –Sen. Branden Meyer, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present

  • Met with Don Miller about starting a Commuter Club
  • Looking into getting a commuter lounge in the Recreation Center

Residence Life –Sen. Chris Williams, Chair
Meeting held with 3 of 3 members present

  • Began inspecting dormitories, specifically focusing on bathrooms, showers and computers
  • Gave Ron Bell list of outdoor lighting fixtures that needed fixed. All of the broken fixtures were repaired

Student Activities –Sen. Brad Hudson, Chair
Meeting held with 2 of 2 members present

  • SB 102 has not yet been executed as model of chair to be purchased has changed
  • Sending a letter to Student Organization Presidents
  • Continuing to work on Student Organizations Space Issues

VI. New Business

  • Senator DeArdo introduced Senate Bill #104 and stated that the funds provided will allow the Campus Calendar to be out for the whole year.
    • Senator Harmon moves to close debate
    • The motion is seconded by Senator Turney
    • Senator Turney motions to close debate by unanimous consent
    • The motion is seconded by Senator Harmon
    • Debate is closed

    • The reading is waived

VII. Announcements

  • Vice-President Martin asks that all SG members participate in Homecoming Activities, specifically the tailgating and Kids’ Corner
  • SG shirts will be here by Homecoming
  • Message from President Freeman: it is important that all initiatives are executed
  • Senator Harmon asks for Faculty Nominations
