Requests for break housing must be completed by the deadlines as outlined below. There will be no exceptions made after this deadline.

Application deadlines:
November Break: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 by 5:00pm                                                                 
Winter Break: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 by 5:00pm
February Break: Tuesday, February 3, 2009 by 5:00pm
Easter Break: Tuesday, March 24, 2009 by 5:00pm                                                                                                                                   
Extended Stay: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 by 5:00pm

ELIGIBILITY (Please review the following policies and statements of responsibility)
In addition to the following guidelines for eligibility, students who are requesting Break Housing must have no record of serious (alcohol or substance abuse, residence hall or conduct probation, vandalism, security or safety violations etc.) conduct violations between January 2007 and the date of application. Such violations will result in the immediate denial of your application.

The following eligibility guidelines apply:

  1. Must be a participant in a university-sponsored activity such as athletics or student activities, etc. If you are an athlete, your coach will submit a roster to the Office of Residence Life and Housing. No further documentation is needed.
  2. Must have permanent residency more than 60 miles from Capital University and have a work study job at the University and/or a job off campus. Documented proof of employment will be REQUIRED. Acceptable documented proof is a letter from your employer on company letterhead including a contact name, phone number, and the dates that the student is required to work. If this is not provided the student will not permitted to stay in break housing. Verification must be received by break housing application deadline in order for your application to be processed.
  3. Must reside out of state or outside the United States.

BREAK HOUSING POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Any student who is not a participant in a university-sponsored program and/or does not reside out of state or outside of the United States, but is approved for break housing by the Office of Residence Life, will be required to pay a daily fee of $15. The fee is to be paid in full before break begins and key pick-up will be permitted. This fee will be applied through the first day of break, through the first day that students are permitted to return to the residence halls.

PLEASE NOTE: If the student is on campus at the request of a department, the fee will be paid by the student or by the department. Students are encouraged to clarify the expectations for the break housing fee payment prior to making a commitment to stay for a break.

  1. The exterior doors of the residence halls will be locked at all times. Students will only be able to access their residence hall room through the front door of the building.                                                                                    
  2. It is the student's responsibility to check each door that he or she uses to ensure that it is locked tightly. When the locks are changed, students living in SA, SS, or Schaaf will be issued a temporary break key. Students living in College Avenue or Cotterman will be electronically monitored by FOB access. Students must not prop open doors, give his or her building key to another person, or allow access to any unauthorized person. Please report any security or other problem(s) to Public Safety immediately (236-6666).
  3. It is your responsibility to return my temporary break housing key to the office of Residence Life and Housing by the date listed below. If you do not return the key you will be charged $100 for the key. It is your responsibility to return the key by the designated date and time listed below.

                                   November Break: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 by 12:00 p.m.
                                   Winter Break: Tuesday, January 6, 2009 by 12:00 p.m.
                                   February Break: Tuesday, March 3, 2009 by 12:00 p.m.
                                   Easter Break: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 by 12:00 p.m.     

 

  1. You are encouraged to exercise care and caution during breaks. More importantly, please report any suspicious individual to Public Safety (236-6666) or the Bexley Police (239-8881). Public Safety officers will patrol inside buildings on a regular schedule during breaks. A list of students authorized to stay in residence halls during break is provided to Public Safety. Any unauthorized student will be asked to leave the building and reported to the Office of Student Rights and Standards.  
  2. Lobby desk staffing and the Campus Health Services are not provided during breaks. Common areas will be cleaned by custodial staff. There will be a Resident Assistant and Residence Hall Coordinator on-call for emergency issues ONLY.
  3. If requested by any university official (including RA), I will comply in accordance with the Student Handbook. No one is permitted in the residence halls during break except those students whose application for vacation housing has been approved. No visitation by anyone (other than immediate family) is permitted during break. The Capital University Apartments and Capital Commons are exceptions to this policy. If you allow an unauthorized person access to the Residence Halls your break housing privileges will be revoked immediately.
  4. The housekeeping staff will be cleaning the residence halls, and as such there might be temporary inconveniences. Residents are encouraged not to interfere with their cleaning process.
  5. Facilities and other university officials may have to enter my room for maintenance or other necessary up-keep of the residence halls.
  6. All University policies are in effect over the break.

Violation of the above policies and procedures, other applicable university policies, and local, state, and federal laws during breaks are subject to immediate revocation of the privilege of being in the residence hall during break, double fines, and other sanctions as appropriate.
