Simplified Videotape Editing
Information Technology

By Paul Ferne, adapted for the web by Dave Althoff

This document covers basic videotape editing concepts, and specifically describes the operation of the Panasonic AG-A570 edit controller and Panasonic AG-5700 VTRs. This equipment may be found in the Self Service area of Information Technology.

There are two types of editing you can perform using this equipment: ASSEMBLE Editing and INSERT Editing.

ASSEMBLE Editing is the process of recording (assembling) material from one tape and attaching it to the existing material on another tape.

INSERT Editing is the process of inserting a new scene at a position on a pre-recorded tape.

To perform either an Assemble or Insert edit you need to define three points on your tapes:

Player VCR: Edit IN point, edit OUT point
Recorder VCR: Edit IN point

OR

  Player VCR: Edit IN point
Recorder VCR: Edit IN point, edit OUT point

ASSEMBLE EDITING

Your Master tape you are creating has to have some video existing on the tape so that you can "assemble" additional video to it. To create this initial video, first select RECORDER on the editing controller.

Press REWIND to make sure the Master tape is rewound. Then press REC and PLAY at the same time.

This will record blank onto your master tape. Allow the tape to record for at least 30 seconds then press STOP.

Select ASSEMBLE on the Editing Controller

Select PLAYER on the Editing Controller and locate your edit IN point on the Player VCR using the jog/shuttle dials and press MARK IN

Likewise locate your OUT point on the Player VCR using the jog/shuttle dials and press MARK OUT.

Select RECORDER on the Editing Controller and locate edit IN point on the Recorder VCR using the jog/shuttle dials and press MARK IN.

Press EDIT START to perform the assemble edit.

INSERT EDITING

You can insert Audio, Video, or both to your Master Tape. Select desired insert function (Audio, Video or both) on the Edit Controller.

Select PLAYER on the Editing Controller and locate your edit IN point on the Player VCR using the jog/shuttle dials and press MARK IN.

Select RECORDER on the Editing Controller and locate edit IN point on the Recorder VCR using the jog/shuttle dials and press MARK IN.

Likewise locate your edit OUT point on the Recorder VCR using the jog/shuttle dials and press MARK OUT.

Press EDIT START to perform the insert edit.

Notes:

  • When the player VCR has started editing, the tape is first rewound for about five seconds from the edit IN point. This means that the first five seconds on the tape after its start cannot be edited.
  • To change an edit point, press the counter reset button with the mark IN or OUT button depressed. The edit point in question will be reset, enabling another point to be entered.
  • During an edit, the Recorder monitor will display the audio and video from the Player VCR. This means you will not see the actual edit. To review the finished edit, you will need to use the shuttle to find a point just before the IN point on the Record VCR. Then play back the finished edit.
  • We have the Hi-Fi record function turned off, since it is not possible to edit the Hi-Fi audio track.
  • Do Not use the controls located on the face of the VCRs! Work only with the Edit Controller.
  • Ask for help before you screw it up!
