Media Presentation Cart - Huber-Spielman Hall
 |
Huber-Spielman Hall is equipped with a mobile
Media Presentation Cart, which is scheduled by the building
secretary. The cart is equipped with a Windows '98-based computer,
a video tape recorder, a data projector, and an amplified
speaker. |
While this equipment is fairly simple to use, it can be a bit intimidating
to first-time users. Here are some instructions and pointers you
may find helpful for working with this equipment.
Part I: Basic setup.
Begin by positioning the cart near the front of the room, with
the front of the projector facing the projection screen. The keyboard,
computer monitor, and VCR are oriented to also face the projection
screen; presumably you are standing or sitting between the cart
and the screen. Unwind the power cord from the cart handle and connect
to any convenient outlet. If you intend to use the Internet connection,
you need to connect the green network cable to the green network
port in the classroom.
Part II: The Data Projector.
|
On top of the cart is a Proxima LX-2 data
projector. This is a high-brightness, high resolution data
projector capable of projecting video or computer images with
a resolution of up to 1024 x 768 pixels. Begin by removing
the lens cap (if present) from the projector by pulling it
straight off as shown here. |
 |
|
Turn on the projector by pressing the yellow
power button on the top of the projector. Within a
few seconds, a bright blue light should appear at the projecotr
lens. On the screen, you should see a PROXIMA logo
and a countdown. Important: None of the projector controls
will function until the countdown is complete! |
 |
|
While you are waiting for the projector to
come up to full brightness, you can adjust the height of the
image. To do this, grasp the front edge of both sides of the
projector and depress the two locking levers located on the
sides at the lower front edge of the unit. This will allow
the adjustment feet to drop out from the base of the projector.
When the position seems about right, release the levers to
lock the feet in place. Make sure both feet are locked before
letting go of the projector! |
Once an image appears on the screen, use the ZOOM and
FOCUS buttons on the top of the projector to adjust the
size and sharpness of the image. You can also adjust these features
using the remote control, described in Part V, below.
When you finish using the projector, turn it off by pressing the
yellow POWER button on top of the projector. When you press
the button, a message should appear on the screen asking if you
really want to turn the power off. If you do indeed, press
the POWER button again. The light will go out immediately,
but the fan will continue to run for a couple of minutes.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT UNPLUG the data projector or the presentation
cart until the fan in the projector slows and the green ready
light comes on on top of the projector. Unplugging the projector
before it is cool can cause serious damage to the projector!
Part III: The Computer
In the tub on the bottom of the cart is a Windows '98 computer.
To connect it to the campus computer network, connect the green
network cable to the network port in the classroom. Note that the
computer can, without any changes in setup, access the network from
any network port in Huber-Spielman Hall. It can NOT access the network
from any other building.
The computer is equipped with a sound card, CD-ROM drive, 1.4Mb
floppy disk drive, and 100 Mb Zip disk drive. It is not necessary
to turn the projector on for the monitor to function. Instead of
a conventional mouse, the computer has a touch-pad pointing device
built-in to the keyboard. In addition, the data projector remote
control can also be used as a mouse substitute when the data projector
is turned on.
 |
On the front of the computer are two pushbuttons
marked with confusing icons. The right-hand button is the
power button. Use it to turn the computer on. No special
action is required to get the data projector to work with
this computer. To turn the computer off when you are done,
select "Shut Down" from the START menu on the desktop; the
computer will turn itself off. |
Part IV: The VTR.
|
The cart is equipped with a JVC VCR similar
to those mounted in some classrooms. The VCR plays back through
the data projector, but the VCR image will not appear on the
computer monitor. |
 |
|
When playing back a videotape, it may be necessary
to press the Video/Computer button on the top of
the projector to switch the projector from data mode to video
mode. |
 |
|
Audio for the VCR plays back through the amplified
speaker on the cart middle shelf. Audio controls are located
on the front of the speaker, on the side of the cart facing
away from the screen. |
 |
Part V: Remote Control.
 |
The projector remote control can be used for
controlling the data projector power, zoom, focus, and keystone
correction features. In addition, the large center button
and the two smaller buttons below it can be used as a wireless
mouse substitute for controlling the computer. Finally, the
remote control is itself also equipped with a laser pointer. |
 |
Unfortunately, the remote control is also
equipped with a power switch. This protects the batteries in
the remote when the system is not in use, but when the power
switch is turned off, none of the remote control functions...not
even the laser pointer...will work. If you have difficulty with
the remote control, check and make sure that the switch is turned
on. When you are not using the remote control, turn its power
switch off to save the batteries.
