Capital University's undergraduate athletic training education program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Capital is the only college/university in central Ohio with a CAAHEP athletic training program. Accreditation means that Capital University meets or exceeds all expectation and educational requirements in the education of student athletic trainers.

The athletic training program provides coursework with a clinical experience preparing students to be athletic trainers. The program is carefully sequenced to allow students to master knowledge and skills. The small class sized and one-on-one are important factors in student development.

Required coursework for athletic training majors includes: human anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, psychology, statistics and research methods, personal health, first aid, CPR, nutrition, care and prevention of athletic injuries, athletic training practices I & II, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, applied human anatomy, administration of athletic training, kinesiology, principles of weight training and conditioning and exercise physiology.

Upon graduation, a student is eligible to take the national certification and state licensure examinations for athletic trainers. Some students may choose to continue their education and seek advanced degrees in related sports medicine fields.

The HSPTS department employs five full-time athletic trainers that are responsible for teaching the athletic training course work and directing the clinical experience. Each one has an extensive background in athletic training education and clinical supervision.

Capital University has an excellent record of placing graduates from the program in a variety of progression experiences including high school settings, sports medicine clinics and colleges and universities.

Students wishing to pursue an education in athletic training must apply to and be accepted into the program. Although a student may declare athletic training as a major upon entering the university, formal admission to the pre-professional program will take place at the end of the second semester and must be earned by demonstrated performance in several areas:

  1. Successful completion of 24 semester hours of undergraduate courses including BIO 100, CHEM 101 or 130, HSPTS 160 First Aid and CPR, HSPTS 260, and HSPTS 289. Performance in these courses will be used to judge the student's ability to successfully complete the program.

  2. A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher at the time of application.

  3. Athletic training staff evaluation of student's performance in the clinical setting.

  4. Formal interviews and two letters of recommendation in the application process.

  5. A directed observation program completed prior to the application deadline. This includes a minimum of 10 practice observations during the year and three game observations. A journal detailing the directed observations is required for application.

  6. Prior to enrollment of HSPTS 254 students must file with the Athletic Training Program Director evidence of at least having two of the Hepatitis B immunizations.

  7. The technical standards set forth by the Athletic Training Educational Program establishes the essential qualities considered necessary for students admitted to this program to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of an entry - level athletic trainer, as well as meet the expectations of the program's accrediting agency (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs {CAAHEP}). Students must read the Technical Standards policy in the Student Athletic Training Manual and verify that they meet the technical standards with or without reasonable accommodations.

Once admitted into the program, students are expected to maintain the 2.75 minimum GPA, pass each athletic training course with a minimum of a C, and must pass each clinical experience with a grade of no less than a B.
