England

Established in 1997, this program is offered during the Fall Semester for senior nursing majors. The first eight weeks are spent at Capital University in classes and selected clinical experiences that focus on community health nursing. During the second half of the semester, students travel to England where they provide community health nursing to clients under the guidance of nursing faculty at the University of Essex, located near London.

The allocation of time and nursing experiences are shown in the diagram below.

Students also enroll for six additional semester hours so they will have 12 semester hours, the minimum number for full time enrollment. Usually this includes three hours of Humanities and three hours of Ethics to meet Capital's general education requirement. Students contract with faculty to complete the second half of these courses through independent study while they are abroad.

Tuition is the same as if the student were on-site at Capital for the entire semester. Estimated costs for round-trip airfare, passport, and housing and food for the eight weeks in England range from $2200-2400. This figure does not include money for personal expenses, books, or housing and food for the first eight weeks.

Do you need more information? You may contact Prof. Rose Walker (Community Health Nursing). Email rwalker@capital.edu. Professor Walker, along with other faculty in the School of Nursing, has spent time at the University of Essex.
