Public
Relations Program Information |
Program: In direct response to national surveys of working professionals
on the skills they lacked going into public relations, Capital University
uniquely designed a public relations major to meet these needs,
while also providing flexibility to allow students to study areas
of particular interests such as account management, writing or design.
The
highly successful internship program places students in public relations
firms, advertising agencies, city, state and county offices, social
service agencies, banking institutions, area newspapers, regional
church headquarters and the promotion departments of radio and television
stations. Students also are involved in the weekly campus newspaper
through reporting and editing labs. Pre-graduation work in Capitals
own Public Relations department and development areas is available.
Capitals
public relations program and its students are accredited by the
Public Relations Society of America and have been recognized by
the Columbus Advertising Federation and the Columbus Chapter of
Women in Communications through the competitive awarding of scholarships
to several Capital students in recent years. Moreover, PRSA has
authorized a student chapter (PRSSA) at Capital University. The
student chapter meets frequently to host professional speakers,
plan chapter activities and help local businesses solve public relations
problems.
Careers and Placement: Many of Capitals public relations
graduates are working with companies and organizations such as banks,
hospitals, design firms, colleges and universities, radio and television
stations, non-profit agencies and public relations and advertising
agencies. Graduates are prepared to pursue further study in fields
such as public relations, advertising, marketing, law and journalism.
Approach: Organizations of all types and sizes employ professional
communicators. Capitals strong liberal arts tradition provides
an excellent foundation for a career in public relations, a field
that depends on breadth of knowledge, analytical ability, critical
judgment and communication skills.
Course work within the public relations major consists of a core
of five public relations courses, augmented by additional study
(depending on a students special interest) in professional
writing, broadcast and print writing and production, marketing,
organizational communication and others.
